Merck presents Green3, a concept for green displays, lighting, and photovoltaics at SID Display Week in Seattle
Merck presented its new green concept, Green3, for displays, lighting, and photovoltaics at SID Display Week in Seattle. This concept stands for eco-friendly materials and processes in the production of energy saving appliances.
Assuming responsibility – this has been a guiding principle at Merck for generations, and environmental protection has become more and more an integral part. The Liquid Crystals (LC) range in the Green3 concept is kind on the environment. It offers researchers and manufacturers innovative solutions from a single source: green materials and green production processes to manufacture green devices.
licristal® – For high contrast LCD televisions with low energy consumption
Merck presented visitors at SID advanced PS-VA materials under the brand name licristal® for displays with excellent resolution. PS-VA (polymer stabilized vertical alignment) is a novel premium LC technology. It offers improved contrast and fast switching speeds in LCD televisions while also reducing energy consumption.
Blue Phase – A cost-effective future technology with wide viewing angles
Merck also presented liquid crystal materials for a switchable Blue Phase, which is considered an outstanding future LC technology. It makes fast switching, high contrast ratios, and wide viewing angles possible. An added bonus is that it can be produced cost-effectively since the cell layout does not have alignment layers and a constant cell gap is not required.
licrivue® – Reactive mesogens for 3D displays
In addition, Merck presented premium materials for a wide range of 3D applications in Seattle, including mixtures for 3D shutter glasses. Merck liquid crystals are meant for fast switching, which enables the high frame rates required in 3D applications. Merck also offers reactive mesogens under the licrivue® brand name. These are used in patterned retarder films for 3D displays viewed through passive polarized glasses. Broadband cholesteric liquid crystal reflective polarizer films (BB CLC RPF) made from commercially available high delta n reactive mesogen mixtures (RMM) from Merck allow LCD manufacturers to increase the brightness of their displays. This has two advantages: lower energy consumption and a maintained high level of brightness in the display.
livilux® – For low voltage OLEDs with a high overall efficiency
The extended livilux® range of OLED materials was also featured in Merck’s portfolio at SID. It now includes a complete new set of electron, hole transport and matrix (host) materials for red, green, and blue emitters based on small molecules. Customers in the display and lighting business are thus able to lower operating voltage and boost the overall efficiency of OLEDs. Merck ensures high purity and reliability with state of the art analytical methods. That makes OLED materials from Merck well suited for mass production.
isiphor™ – Efficient lighting materials for color-on-demand concepts
Merck offers a wide range of efficient lighting materials (phosphors) for manufacturers of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) under the isiphor™ brand name. The exhibition at SID emphasized the significance of the isiphor™ product range. It supports color-on-demand concepts, ranging from warm to cold white light, which Merck has earned a fast reputation for as a reliable partner in the lighting industry.
isishape® – An easy solution for smart patterning
Merck also provided information on its efficient and eco-friendly isishape® materials at SID, which make it possible for manufacturers in the display and photovoltaic industry to perform intelligent smart cost-effectively. With the products in the isishape HiperEtch® and SolarEtch® ranges, antireflective coatings, passivation layers and transparent conductive materials can be etched selectively while being kind on the environment.
The isishape® concept has stood the test in main productions of the latest generation of touch panels. It is also suitable for the production of flexible displays, OLEDs and EL backlights, as well as mass-produced solar cells.
lisicon® – Printable materials for organic electronics
Merck presented manufacturers of flexible displays, organic RFID chips and solar cells with the lisicon® brand at SID. The brand offers a large selection of printable materials for use in organic electronics. In addition to advanced semiconductor formulations, the range includes dielectrics, surface treatment materials, and additional chemical process aids.
